Most romantic road trip through Europe!
You can put together an romantic road trip through Europe yourself, but this is what I would do. What are you waiting for? Let’s hit the road!
- Road trip: Europe
- Length: 5,000 kilometers (shorter routes possible)
- Duration: 2-3 weeks
1. Start with culture in Prague – Czech Republic
Get in the car and only get out when you are in Prague. The first stop of this perfect road trip through Europe is the Czech Republic. It is the perfect start to your holiday. Prague is a fabulously beautiful, ancient city that excels in history and architecture and is, therefore, the city where you can experience a unique culture.
Stroll through the old town with its baroque streets, have a picnic in one of the beautiful city gardens, and enjoy the best view of the city from the Charles Bridge. Discover the beautiful Staroměstské náměstí square, Prague Castle, the old royal palace and beautiful gardens. And walk through the Golden Street: eleven little gnome houses where you can buy nice things, and where it turns everything gold – with a little imagination and the right lighting – in the evening. The castle is a bit higher and also gives the best view of the city.
✭ Accomodation: Occidental Praha – Prague
Spending the night in Prague during this road trip is best done in hotel Occidental Praha. A hotel with a modern design, a hip bar for cocktails, and two excellent restaurants. Occidental Praha is located in a quiet spot on the south side of Prague. With the metro (literally around the corner) you can reach the old town square in no time.
If you travel on Saturday, you can also take part in the city tour of Prague for free (which starts at 3 p.m.). If you want a typical Czech meal, go for goulash or dumplings. In Staré Město – the old center – you will find plenty of cozy restaurants.

2. Cruise the romantic lake Bled – Slovenia
The second stop along this ultimate route for a romantic road trip through Europe is one of Europe’s greatest secrets. Slovenia is small – about half the size of the Netherlands – but big when it comes to nature.
Stalactite caves, gigantic waterfalls, and vast vineyards form the backdrop. It’s an outdoor dream and camping with the Alps around you is exceptionally beautiful. Your next destination: Bled.
In the middle of Lake Bled, you will find the most romantic place in Slovenia: a wooded island with a charming church on it. You have probably seen pictures of it before. You sail there with a boat. Surrounded by the beautiful green surroundings of forests and rocks you feel the romance and you immediately understand why so many couples get married here.
Make sure to take time out for an introduction to the clear blue rivers that flow through the country. In particular, the emerald green Soča River, one of the most beautiful glacial rivers in Europe. This river runs for 96 kilometers through the country, with the Soča Trail right next to it, a phenomenal hiking trail that takes you along the banks of the Soča.
✭ Accommodation: Hotel Ribno – Bled
Spend the night in Bled at Hotel Ribno, a unique hotel on the outskirts of Bled but surrounded by nature. A very attractive accommodation where you can experience the ultimate outdoor feeling. Hotel Ribno is also the first zero-waste hotel in Slovenia!
On foot, by bike or by car, from the hotel, you can easily get to Lake Bled to hike, sail or enjoy the view. It is such a place where you would actually like to stay much longer… At least settle down on a terrace in the village for a real “Kremsnita”
3. Breathtaking waterfalls in Plitvice – Croatia
A road trip through Europe is not complete without a good dose of natural miracles. The Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia seems to have come straight from a fairy tale book: with enchanting waterfalls and emerald green lakes, it is literally a paradise on earth. The park is not so far from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. You will find a total of sixteen lakes with no less than ninety waterfalls that have flowed for thousands of years!
In 1979, the Plitvice Lakes National Park has also been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and since then it has been a protected natural park. There are marked walking routes through the park, but it is even more fun to be guided by what you see around you. In the summer you are really not alone in this park and then it is nice to go off the beaten track. If you come early in the summer, it is less busy.
✭ Accommodation: Camping Korana – Plitvice
An overnight stay in Plitvice Lakes National Park naturally means an overnight stay in nature. At Camping Korana you can stay in log cabins, a few kilometers from the entrance of the park. This way you can be one of the first to discover this beautiful nature park full of spectacular waterfalls in the early morning. The log cabins at Camping Korana are basic and cozy and are situated in beautiful surroundings. From here you can cycle or walk many beautiful routes.
4. Venice – Italy
Venice is one of the most visited and most romantic cities in Italy. The combination of rich history and therefore many interesting sights make Venice a popular destination. The “unique selling point” of Venice is, of course, the location of the old city on islands in a lagoon, where transport is formed by water. The many channels and the beautiful Venetian gondolas have a huge attraction for tourists from all over the world. It is not without reason that so many people want to see Venice at least once in their lives.
I would not spend the night in Venice, but find a nice Airbnb in Bologna, which is on your way to Cinque Terre.
5. The lovely Cinque Terre – Italy
Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore in Italy make up the five towns called Cinque Terre. The charm of these world-famous towns is irresistible, although they have also been overrun by mass tourism. But that does not matter, because the environment surrounding this are is also beautiful.
Take the footpath between Riomaggiore and Manarola, this is called Via dell’Amore. A fifteen-minute walk that you must do with your loved one. The five villages are located in Cinque Terre National Park, a beautiful area with citrus and olive groves and a magnificent view over the Italian coast with its steep cliffs and wild rocks. You cannot wish for a better stop during this romantic road trip through Europe!
✭ Accommodation: Parkhotel Argento – Levanto
Spend the night on the Italian coast around the Cinque Terre at Parkhotel Argento in Levanto. A dream of a hotel and an oasis of peace (with a swimming pool!). Parkhotel Argento is wonderfully quiet in the hills of Levanto and offers a phenomenal view over the valley and the sea. The train to Monterosso al Mare, the northernmost village of the Cinque Terre, is within walking distance. A lovely place to recover from the lively and popular Cinque Terre.
Pro tip: Reserve a table for dinner at L’Ancora Della Tortuga in Monterosso, a special place with amazing sea views.
6. The sun-drenched Côte d´Azur – France
It is time for sun, sea, and beach! For baguette and vin blanc on the beach and the sun-drenched French south is the ultimate place for this! The azure blue seawater is calling you and among all that exuberant enjoyment there are plenty of nice places and cities to visit: such as Èze, a beautiful medieval village with a unique location, the colorful Menton or the sophisticated but very pleasant St. Tropez. It will be difficult to leave the Côte d’Azur after your visit.
On your way during the drive from Italy, another beautiful part of the route awaits: Les Trois Corniches between Nice and Menton. These three winding roads are located at three different heights against the steep slopes around the coast, but all three give you the same view: the Mediterranean Sea with a twinkling sun above it. A pleasure to drive and also one of the most beautiful parts of this Europe road trip!
✭ Accommodation: Sun Riviera – Cannes
Hotel Sun Riviera in Cannes is the best place for a stop in the Côte d´Azur. A nice hotel with renovated rooms with a swimming pool and a beautiful garden. The attractive center of Cannes and the beach are nearby. Actually, everything you need is nearby: pleasant shopping streets, good restaurants, and even a daily fruit and vegetable market. Although during this road trip through Europe you will mainly stop here for some beach-time.
For a relaxed and good dinner, head to La Môme in Cannes, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. And definitely walk down Boulevard de la Croisette!
7. Dancing on the beach in Barcelona – Spain
Summer is the best season for Barcelona. Actually, this city is one big open-air museum, courtesy of Gaudí, so you won’t get bored in the mornings. In the afternoon, the beaches of La Barceloneta are the best place to be, as you can cool off in the summer. In the evening you will settle down at one of the chiringuitos, hip Spanish beach bars, for ice-cold cocktails and dance until the sun goes down.
Summer evenings last a long time in Barcelona, it is until very late that you can enjoy tapas, paella, and sangria. To do this, head to Carrer del Parlament, also known as Barcelona’s foodie street, a street brimming with great restaurants and bars. It’s going to be hard to leave Barcelona behind, but more fun awaits you on this road trip through Europe!
✭ Accommodation: Condal Mar – Barcelona
Hotel Condal Mar in Barcelona is modern and stylish. On the roof terrace, you can take a dip in the pool and look out over the city with a cocktail in your hand. Hotel Condal Mar is not located directly in the lively center of Barcelona, but you can rent bicycles (or electric scooters like I did) that will take you quickly to the best places in the city. In about 20 minutes you cycle to the lively neighborhoods of El Born and Barri Gòtic.
The route on the boulevard Passeig Marítim del Bogatell is the most beautiful way to cycle, directly along the most beautiful beaches of Barcelona.
8. The vibe of Biarritz – France
You’re staying in France, but now you’re heading to the other coast. The French south coast on the Atlantic Ocean is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, but even if you’ve never been on a surfboard before, this is the place to be. The relaxed atmosphere in the city, the phenomenal beaches, and a bottle of French wine at sunset every evening: Biarritz is the place where you decide you never want to go home…
A little north of Biarritz is also Dune du Pyla, with a height of 107 meters it is the highest dune in Europe. This dune stretches for three kilometers across the coast and is fantastic to climb. While your feet sink into the loose sand, you imagine yourself in the Sahara for a while. From the top, you have phenomenal views of the Atlantic Ocean and that is well worth the climb.
Have you always wanted to fly? That dream can come true here because the real daredevils book a paraglide experience here and enjoy the beauty of this part of Europe while floating through the air.
✭ Accommodation: Radisson Blue – Biarritz
Hotel Radisson Blue is the perfect place for a road trip stop in Biarritz. This hotel is just steps from the beach. Radisson Blue has everything you need: an outdoor pool, wellness facilities, and a rich breakfast buffet. The best restaurants and bars of Biarritz are all a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Tip: Bistro Le Café du Commerce is a must for a nice dinner and beach tent Le Surfing – right in front of the hotel – is perfect for a lunch with a sea view.
9. Romantic road trips can’t do without Paris
There is no better place to end this romantic road trip through Europe: Paris. Not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe but also a very versatile city that you can experience in many ways. Paris is literally bursting with highlights, every street is a work of art in itself. The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, and Sacré Coeur are more than enough to keep you entertained for a few days.
If you only want to visit one museum, go for Musee d’Orsay. Rue Montorgueil is the best street for foodies, bursting with bakeries, cafes, and cheese shops.

The trendiest district of Parsij – Le Marais – is also within easy reach: you will find the nicest shops and restaurants on Rue Vieille du Temple and Rue Rambuteau.
